Calm down, girls, don’t panic. Because I’m not gonna tell you to stop buying clothes. I would be the last person to say something ridiculous like that. But I do have to admit, cleaning up your closet is something we should all do from time to time.

After many attempts and lots of comments from my friends and boyfriend, about how I should learn to let go of certain clothes, I decided to put on my brave face and finally do this. And trust me, this was a lot harder than you can probably imagine. After all, my clothes were all bought with money for which I did a lot of hard work. Getting rid of that is always a bit painful.

For those who also tend to have problems with this, I’ve created a little list that can help. So switch off those emotions for a day and let’s do this together!

Step 1: WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME …

We all have them. Items we actually don’t wear anymore. And “I wore this all the time three summers ago” doesn’t count. If you haven’t worn it for over two years, get rid of it! (That includes that one sweater you still have from when you were twelve but can’t to seem to let go.)

Step 2: Some day …

Aaah those ‘some day’ pieces. We had to buy that cute skirt even if it didn’t quite fit. We all have at least one item that we keep because we truly believe that one day, it will have purpose. Stop tormenting yourself by trying it on over and over again, only to see that we’re still not quite there yet. So here’s an idea: Give it to a friend, sell it or put it in one of those clothes containers, whatever. But do something with it. As long as it’s permanently removed from your closet.

Step 3: Time to move on …

This is a hard one for some of us. Those amazing boots you bought five years ago and which have become your best friends… That comfy sweater from last winter you seemed to be wearing every day… If it’s outworn, let it go. It’s time to move on, sweeties.

Stuff that doesn’t need to go: Duplicates! That’s such a typical man thing to say. YES, we do need four black dresses, sweaters in different tones of pink and two pairs of red pumps. Live with it.

Golden tip: Once you’re done with gathering all the clothes that can go, be sure to follow through. Don’t leave this pile laying there for a month because chances are big you’ll secretly start putting things back. You’re sneaky like that, aren’t you? I know I can be…
